Concrete Retaining Walls Coquitlam

Our client wanted to make sure her greenery stayed in place and we recommended a concrete retaining wall. The finish ended up looking exquisite and matched the modern exterior perfectly.

Retaining walls are typically installed in areas where buildings need extra support due to soil that could slide from beneath. These retaining walls act as a pillar that holds the soil from sliding and keeping the building in its place. Retaining walls can be used for both residential and commercial settings. Installing a retaining wall can have many benefits to your property. It can act like a binder and prevent any deformation of the foundation by keeping soil in its place. Your home or commercial space will have a much lower risk of sink holes and floods. It can also be a great way to beautify dirt piles and slopes.

In more recent times, retaining walls have become popular in the residential space as they can be installed to give a sleek finish as well as elevating the appearance of your front and back yard. However, if you are wanting to have a retaining wall installed you must have a skilled professional do the job. Only a skilled concrete contractor with experience will be able to properly install a retaining wall. This is definitely not the time and place for a DIY project or a cheap contractor. A retaining wall that is not properly constructed and installed is at risk of collapsing which can cause serious injuries if anyone is around the wall.

Concrete Retaining Wall Installation

In most municipalities in BC, having a retaining wall larger than 4ft requires a permit. In your permit application, a drawing produced by a professional engineer must be provided. As we touched on above, retaining walls need a skilled labour to install and need to be taken seriously. If you are looking to install a retaining wall above 4ft but don’t want to go through the permit process, we have a solution for you. We can install multiple retaining walls below 4ft that have some space in between them. This can actually create a great visual aesthetic as you can have plants growing in each middle section.

Retaining walls can be made from different materials such as stones, rock, wood, green walls, and of course concrete. Retaining walls made from concrete can come in a couple of different forms. Small concrete blocks can be a great choice for many landscaping projects. These blocks can come in a wide variety of block shape, designs, and textures. A great benefit of smaller blocks is that they are great for creating curved shape for a nice organic shaped landscape. Due to its size, it is also great for projects that will have a job site with limited access.

A special project we took on was a large retaining wall that ran parallel with a staircase. The result was a layered stone pattern with greenery planted on top.
A municipal client of ours requested a retaining wall in a public park to ensure the flowers and plant would stay in place. The installation by our concrete contractors was perfectly done.

Large concrete blocks can be great for larger scale retaining wall installations. Large sized concrete blocks don’t have the same versatility as smaller ones and can be a bit more limiting from a design perspective. If you enjoy an industrial look though, they can be the perfect thing for your space. Concrete blocks of this size will require properties with good access as larger equipment will be needed to carry the blocks.

Poured reinforced concrete walls is a great way to add a modern feel to your home. On top of being the most durable type of retaining wall, you are able to have curved surfaces and usually are not limited by the size of the job site. This type of concrete is also commonly used for the foundation of residential homes as well. Due to the skilled labour and specialized tools required for the job, this type of concrete is more on the premium side of things. It goes good with the majority of home exteriors and landscape efforts you have put into your space.
